Cuba the land of Sun and Surf

Picture of Mrs. Old Tarf and Myself on top of the Hill in Canadon, taken last April in Cuba.

This is a picture of Marg and myself in Santa Lucia, Cuba (Friend of ours from England and the local Taxi cab).

Well, We have been going to Cuba to the Holguin area to be exact for several years now. Always to the same resort the Blau Costa Verde. We were planning on going again this year around the 21st of April but the stars have not lined up. So we will not be going this year.

Our English friends , who we met there will be back for the the 9th or 10th time. The place is great the service is very good and the staff are wonderful. Lots to do and see, great beach and pool.

Perhaps another year.

What a lovely set of photos and memories. I've travelled around the island a few times, but not enough. You're so lucky to be from a country with normal relations with Cuba. I'm from the United States and only can go there because I'm a journalist and always working.

My father and his parents lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1942. They were German Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, and not political left-wingers. That family history is where my own interest in Cuba comes from. My dad met my mom in the United States and that's how I came into this world.

Cuban society today represents an effort to build an alternative to the way life was under the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, who ran Cuba before Fidel Castro led a revolution there. No one complained about a lack of human rights and democracy in those days, but U.S. businesses were protected.

Some things work, some don’t. Like any society, Cuba its flaws and contradictions, as well as having solid achievements. No society is perfect. But we can certainly learn a few things from Cuba’s experience. I think we can learn more than a few.

Since August 2000, the CubaNews list, a free Yahoo news group has compiled a wide range of materials, pro and con, about Cuba, its people, politics and culture, and life within the island and affecting it in the Cuban diaspora abroad.

Walter Lippmann-welcome to my blog.

We really like Cuba. Not just the Resort but the real cuban countryside and the people themselves. They are very welcoming and friendly and it seems if you show them respect and honesty, they shower with their friendship and love.

I will miss friendship this year more than the Sun or the Free Moijitos. As even 1 year is a long time to be away as so much happens in one's life.

Yes, it's a remarkable place. Though I've lived on my street here in Los Angeles for twenty years, and have only been traveling to Cuba since late 1999, I know more people and have more friendly contact on my block in Cuba than I do on my block here in California.

Best wishes.

I feel slightly guilty about stars not lining up... although my own stars over here are not lining up either pops, so maybe I should have just trundled over anyway.

Glad to see you enjoying life, Old Tarf. Your fine head of silver hair reminds me of Cassius Chaerea in I Claudius.

GB- The closet I will ever get to Caesar is a Caesar Salad.

MM- You can Trundle over any time. I do hope that
it is not what I think. Call me any time.

WL-I agree the Cuban neighbors we met whilst we were visiting , were exceptional.

What an adventurous place to visit.

I'm not jealous - oh no. Not one bit.
