We have a Joint Account and it works out great that way. We both have control over what goes in and how it is spent. No secret Bank Accounts. Not that we could afford more than one. With all the ridiculous charges that the banks make from you every month.
I always pay all the bills first each month, then the rest either goes on groceries, repairs and extras. When we first started going together. I used to do the accounts 6 months in advance and it used to drive G. nuts but it worked out. Now it is just a month in advance. As I do everything or almost everything on line; "account wise".
Some things are just a lot better in person. (HA,HA)

I have never had a joint account. I'm not sure why really. I am probably a control freak!
However, I did once have a joint credit card which I guess worked much the same way - we used that for all the household expenses - food, children's clothes, petrol, holidays etc and each paid half of the bill every month.
And yes, some things would not be quite the same "online" but banking is fine.
RB- It was just something we did. and after 25 years it is still the same.
We have never had an argument about money in all these years. So it works very well for us.
I don't see the point in separate accounts really. In fact I don't understand why at all - it belongs to the kids whatever way you look at it.
They always need something and what I want isn't really a factor any more. The best I can do is persuade the boys that they really need a new chimnea.
Ahh - very difficult with the latest Wii games competing for funds.
Personally i don't think i would ever want a joint account. Cos the cynical me is thinking bout how difficult it could get once the marraige is over
But i think it's great that it has worked out for you guys all these years
How encouraging...not just on the joint account business but marriage as well :p
EK-It is all a matter of trust and faith in your spouse or partner. I agree with you there really is no need for separate accounts.
If you only have one account it makes it easier to remember to spend it all before the kids get it.
Sabrina- After 50 or more years of you being married. The matter of joint accounts wouldn't even be an issue. The problem would be which Bank is it?
I forget.? :)
Joint account for joint spending, separate accounts for personal spending.
Well that was the one thing that *did* work in my last live-in relationship at least!
I don't understand joint accounts and never had one. I mean, I can just about keep track of the ins and outs in my account. Why would I need the stress of following my spouse's financial incontinence? Plus I might not like the $80,000 transfers to Spitzer's Whores Inc.
Poet-Laura-eate- So it was not all bad.
Emmak- New York States Tax Dollars used for illegal Briefs. Seems like Spitzers wife couldn't make sense of all the ins and outs either.
I would never have a joint account again - really I wouldn't.
Mutley- I can understand that. I thought the same thing before I met my wife.
we have always had a joint account...even when separated we still maintain it...just is the way we have always done it and money really doesn't mean that much to me as long as everything gets paid...the rest is just the rest...
Hi OT; We don`t have a joint account, not for any diverse reason other than Darling Trubes pays most of the the bills from his account and I try to save for Holidays etc. As with most couples we have a mutual trust of each other and this seem to work.
I suspect that DT would be horrified, at the thought of Moi getting my little 'mitts' on his funds and guard his Bank Acount with caution, wise man, say I !
sorry i hav`nt e-mailed you as promised but have been keeping a low profile, due to, yet another health problem. If you`re brave enough you can read all about it on my Trubes site.
Hope you andMrs OT are in good health and having some good weather.
It is very changeable here but the sun shines at present!
Love Di.xx
Dear Mr Old Tarf. thank you for all my messages. I hope you had a lovely easter too
Wow! A financially literate bloke! I guess you would be ok to have a joint account with Old Tarf :-)
Mutley, wouldn't that rather depend upon how much she was putting into it :-)?
Lilith-you are right; as mrs Tarf puts more into the account than I do.
i do not know about the financially literate bloke though. You give me to much credit.
Both My wife and Merms think I am very trying and have a bad case of male selective hearing.
